Seven Killed in Horrific Massacre Near Ecuador’s Drug-Trafficking Hub Amid Rising Violence

On Saturday, a horrific armed attack in a small town near Guayaquil, Ecuador, claimed the lives of seven people, including two minors. The police found the bodies of seven male citizens without vital signs, all with multiple gunshot wounds in Nobol, a town in the province of Guayas. Among the deceased were two identified as minors and two had criminal records.

The massacre took place on Friday night and it took authorities several hours to locate all the bodies as they were scattered across different areas. According to local media sources citing police reports, the motive behind the attack appears to be revenge. Nobol is located just 42 kilometers from Guayaquil, a city known for its high crime rates and drug trafficking ties.

Ecuador has seen an increase in massacres over recent years due to its strategic location between major cocaine producers Colombia and Peru. The country serves as a transit point for drug trafficking activities which has led to escalating violence and a rise in homicide rate. In 2023, Ecuador recorded a record 43 murders per 100,000 inhabitants. President Daniel Noboa declared the nation to be in a state of internal armed conflict following a violent attack by criminal gangs that resulted in twenty deaths in January.
