Siemens AG is set to acquire ebm-papst’s industrial drive technology (IDT) business in a deal expected to be completed by mid-2025. The IDT business, located in St. Georgen and Lauf an der Pegnitz, Germany, and Oradea, Romania, will be integrated into Siemens’ Digital Industries division.
Cedrik Neike, a member of the managing board at Siemens AG and CEO of its Digital Industries division, stated that the acquisition aligns well with Siemens due to ebm-papst’s innovative portfolio of mechatronic drive systems and skilled employees. This acquisition will allow Siemens to explore new business opportunities and expand its reach in the rapidly growing market for intelligent, battery-powered drive solutions in intralogistics and mobile robot applications.
Dr. Klaus Geißdörfer, CEO of ebm-papst Group, expressed that this acquisition by Siemens is a significant strategic move for their IDT business. The lack of a global sales organization for maximum growth has been a challenge for their IDT business, which Siemens can now address. The integration with Siemens will provide the IDT business with global market access, opening up new opportunities for innovation and growth.
The IDT division of ebm-papst currently employs around 650 people. They specialize in producing fans and integrated mechatronic systems in the protective, extra-low voltage range, as well as motion-control systems for free-range, driverless transportation. This acquisition will complement Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio and enhance its position in flexible production automation.
The proceeds from the sale of the IDT business will be reinvested in ebm-papst’s Air Technology and Heating Technology divisions as well as used to strengthen their regional presence in Europe, Asia, and the Americas while investing in future product portfolio areas like digitalization and sustainability.
