Sturgis Planning Commission Approves Site Plan for New Cannabis Retail Store

On Tuesday, the Sturgis Planning Commission unanimously approved a site plan for a new cannabis product retail store. EAC Industries LLC presented the request to renovate and upgrade the property at 1640 S. Centerville Road, previously known as Retail Warehouse, into a retail cannabis establishment.

In 2022, the property was previously considered for a cannabis-based business, and a site plan review by another retailer was approved at that time. However, that project did not materialize, and now EAC Industries LLC is moving forward with plans to open a retail cannabis store called Haze Sturgis. The developers intend to enhance the property by adding parking, an approved storm water management network, potentially expanding the existing building, and installing fencing around the east and south boundaries to prevent trespassing from nearby Walmart to South Centerville Road.

During the planning commission meeting, representatives of the project clarified that the business will only be a retail establishment, with no on-site growing or pre-production activities. Before a primary building permit can be issued, the city has granted a permit for the demolition of the residential building located at 1680 South Centerville Road, despite its address being 1674 South Centerville Road. The developers have agreements in place for the demolition of the structure.

Additionally, approval from the Michigan Department of Transportation is required for the existing driveway openings onto South Centerville Road before a building permit can be issued. Commissioner Buddy Denman was not present at the meeting. This site plan approval marks a significant step forward for the new cannabis business in Sturgis.
