In Peachtree Corners, Georgia, over 600 bicyclists cross the busy Peachtree Parkway every Saturday. This road sees over 62,000 cars travel on it daily. However, Assistant City Manager Brandon Branham pointed out that annually, more than 130,000 cyclists are injured and over 1,000 die in crashes nationwide. This underscores the importance of road safety for all users.
Branham highlighted the city’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and bicyclists, especially at intersections where they may encounter vehicles. Peachtree Corners is known for testing cutting-edge technology at its Curiosity Lab, including equipment that can alert both cyclists and drivers about potential collisions in advance.
One of the technologies being tested is the Spoke Companion App, which allows cyclists and drivers to be alerted to each other’s presence on the road. This proactive approach aims to prevent accidents and save lives. The city plans to put this technology to the test during a pro cycling race event this weekend, focusing on improving safety for all road users.
While acknowledging that this technology is still evolving, the city is exploring additional ways to alert drivers and cyclists to potential dangers, including digital signage. The ultimate goal is to reduce fatalities and create a safer environment for everyone on the road.
