The UAE has recorded a significant increase in the number of patents registered, with a total of 5,000 patents and 3,415 patent applications in 2023, an impressive 19.5% increase from the previous year. This growth is a result of the Ministry of Economy’s proactive approach to creating a legislative and regulatory environment that safeguards intellectual property rights and supports entrepreneurs with innovative ideas and projects.
The ministry emphasized the importance of protecting intellectual property as a critical component of sustainable development across all sectors, particularly in economic sectors. The UAE has established a pioneering legislative framework for intellectual property that adheres to global standards, thanks to the efforts of Undersecretary Abdullah Al Saleh. The ministry has implemented three laws to regulate industrial property rights, trademarks, copyrights, and related rights, along with launching 11 initiatives to support intellectual property applications. These measures have contributed significantly to creating an environment that fosters intellectual property activities and innovation, resulting in a substantial increase in patent applications in the country.
In honor of World Intellectual Property Day on April 26th, the Ministry of Economy will organize several seminars, workshops, and competitions from April 22nd to April 30th. These events aim to raise awareness about national laws related to intellectual works and highlight their role in stimulating innovation, supporting science and technology fields, promoting sustainability in intellectual works.
This year’s World Intellectual Property Day focuses on how innovation can contribute to achieving the goals of “We Are the Emirates 2031” vision by positioning the UAE as a global hub for economy. The Ministry of Economy remains committed to providing opportunities for creative individuals with innovative ideas while transforming these ideas into successful projects that drive economic growth and sustainability.
