The Chinese social media service Tiktok has recently launched a version of its app in France and Spain called Tiktok Lite, which rewards users over 18 years old for completing various tasks on the platform. These earned points can be exchanged for discount coupons, gift cards, or virtual coins. However, the EU Commission has raised concerns about the effects of Tiktok’s reward program on children and users’ mental health.
The commission has requested information from Tiktok regarding the risks associated with Tiktok Lite, specifically focusing on the impact of the reward program on mental health, addiction, and the protection of minors on the platform. The EU digital services regulation requires large online platforms to address social risks such as the spread of illegal content and disinformation.
In February, the commission launched an investigation into potential violations of the digital services act by Tiktok, specifically looking into the negative effects on young people. Failure to comply with these regulations could result in fines up to six percent of the company’s global turnover.
