The largest project ever for coastal regeneration in the world.

The Dubai Mangroves project is a massive initiative by the Dubai-based company Urb, aimed at transforming the city’s coastal area into a vast forest of giant mangrove trees. This ambitious project seeks to prevent erosion, reduce flooding and lower carbon emissions, making it an essential step towards sustainable living.

Urb is a well-established company in Dubai that has undertaken several successful projects such as the air-conditioned cycling track and coral reef regeneration. The new Dubai Mangroves project will span over 72 km and focus on the mangrove tree, known for its unique ability to absorb CO2, prevent erosion, support marine life and ensure food security. By planting over 100 million mangrove trees, the project aims to protect the city from rising sea levels and erosion while collecting 1.23 million tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to emissions from over 260,000 gasoline-powered vehicles.

In addition to absorbing CO2 and preventing erosion, the mangroves will act as nurseries for marine life, increase fish stocks and filter water with their roots. The planting of such a large number of trees will take several years; however, Urb plans to use AI-powered drones and satellite photography to monitor tree growth and promote healthy growth conditions.

The Dubai Mangroves project will also include small beaches, social spaces walkways that will provide visitors with an immersive experience of nature while learning about climate change adaptation. There will be a visitor education center where people can learn about the importance of mangroves in our ecosystems and how they contribute to sustainable living. Moreover, there will be a botanical museum that showcases various species of flora found in the region alongside a nature research center that aims to further study these plants’ impact on our environment.

Currently in the design phase, this ambitious project has selected six pilot studies that demonstrate feasibility and help Dubai adapt to climate change effects.

In conclusion, Urb’s Dubai Mangroves project is an ambitious yet achievable goal towards creating a sustainable future for our planet by promoting eco-friendly practices that protect our environment while improving quality of life for all citizens living in this beautiful city.
