On Sunday, more than 100,000 people took to the streets of Jerusalem in a massive protest against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The largest protest since the recent attacks from Gaza, it marks the beginning of a “national week of protest” organized by opposition parties. The main march was accompanied by smaller demonstrations throughout the city, with the ultimate goal of setting up a “tent city” in front of the Knesset to demand early elections.
Families of hostages kidnapped in Gaza have joined the protest, seeing Netanyahu as an obstacle to an exchange agreement. Eli Albag, whose daughter is being held captive by Hamas, announced their participation in the protests against the prime minister. The opposition, led by Yesh Atid, Labor Party and Histadrut confederation of unions, chanted slogans demanding elections and criticizing Netanyahu’s government for its inaction.
The Police deployed riot police and clashed with protesters, using charges and smelly substances. Yair Lapid, the opposition leader, criticized the government’s handling of events and called for elections to bring change. Protesters plan to maintain their camp for four days with daily demonstrations and rallies outside coalition supporters’ homes.
In addition to protests against Netanyahu, there were also demonstrations in Mea Sharim demanding equality in recruitment. The Police intervened as violence erupted and an ultra-Orthodox individual was arrested.
