Volodymyr Zelensky reiterates the need for additional air defense systems following Russian attack

On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky again urged allies for more anti-aircraft defense systems after the country was able to shoot down only 21 out of 34 missiles launched by Russia that caused serious damage to the energy system in three regions. Zelensky emphasized the need for political decisions and agreements to intercept all missiles and drones fired by Russian forces. He thanked the EU and other partners for their assistance and called for air defense systems and quality weapons to ensure actions on the front lines.

In response to Russian advances on the Eastern Front, Washington announced the release of $6 billion in military aid to Ukraine. Spain also announced the shipment of Patriot anti-aircraft missiles in a virtual meeting with over fifty countries. Zelensky stressed the importance of quick action and full implementation of agreements to stabilize the front and advance towards Ukraine’s war objectives.

Zelensky was able to secure approval for over $60 billion in new US aid after warning that the Ukrainian Army would only last until March or April without this support. The difficult operational and strategic situation was discussed with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and allies in the Ramstein format, as revealed in a Telegram message. Despite the challenges faced, Zelensky remains hopeful that with continued support and rapid action, Ukraine can achieve its goals in the conflict.
