Colonel Marino Lugo, arrested in Venezuela for oil corruption, found dead

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has announced new arrests related to the corruption network that has ensnared the state oil company, PDVSA. Colonel Marino Lugo, one of the individuals arrested in the scandal, was found dead in his cell, with authorities suspecting it to be a suicide. The Public Ministry reported that Lugo was found hanging in his cell and an autopsy was conducted to determine the cause of death.

Lugo was detained at an unknown time and wanted in connection with the PDVSA-Cripto case, which has led to the arrest of over 54 individuals, including former Ministers of Oil and Economy. He was facing charges of various crimes such as embezzlement, money laundering, and association.

The investigation into the corruption scandal continues, with authorities working to hold those involved accountable. The deaths of two detainees in previous arrests marred by suicides and illness have cast a shadow on the case. Despite this, Maduro remains committed to rooting out corruption and ensuring transparency in Venezuela’s oil industry.
