According to internal documents shared with media partners investigating Chinese intelligence activities in Europe, Volkswagen, the largest car manufacturer in Europe, has been hacked for years. The hackers were able to steal 19,000 files from the Volkswagen Group, including information on new technological developments. This was revealed in a dossier obtained by sources familiar with the incident.
The hacking was discovered in 2014 when the Volkswagen system was infiltrated through a branch in Puebla, Mexico. In response to this attack, Volkswagen initiated a major clean-up operation known as Operation Remediation 65. This operation involved forensic IT experts reconstructing the stolen files with a focus on technology related to engine development and e-mobility. The clean-up operation cost over 100 million euros and involved shutting down almost the entire global IT system of the automotive group.
Audi Brussels was also involved in the global remediation operation, according to internal documents. As part of this effort, Volkswagen emphasized the importance of cybersecurity and stated that they continuously work to keep their IT landscape secure and ready for use.
