Michael Folmer, the warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Ocean Prediction Center in College Park, Md., will be presenting at Science Saturday via Zoom on March 30, 2024. The event is organized by the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences and is free for all attendees.
During his presentation titled “Forecasting the Weather From the Open Ocean to the Jersey Shore,” Folmer will discuss his work in providing life-saving forecast products and Impact-Based Decision Support Services for various entities, including the U.S. Coast Guard, cruise lines, the cargo industry, and mariners who travel beyond 60 nautical miles offshore. He will also highlight the Jersey Shore Mesonet, a network of automated weather stations that includes one at LBIF and ongoing efforts to expand it.
Although he has a background in tropical meteorology, Folmer has shifted his focus to satellite and mid-latitude weather in recent years. Prior to his current role at OPC, he served as a satellite liaison for different weather centers’ satellite programs.
