In a recent feat, British YouTube host James Whomsley, known for his engineering channel, set a new world record by constructing the largest remote-controlled aircraft carrier model in the world. The project took him three months to complete, using a combination of wood, foam, and fiberglass. To ensure its durability and functionality, expanding foam was utilized to make the carrier waterproof.
After completing the carrier model, Whomsley had to learn how to operate two remote-controlled model planes and make modifications to both the planes and the carrier to successfully land them on it. The experience of bringing his idea to life and seeing it work was described by Whomsley as “amazing”.
To facilitate the landings, first-person view cameras were added to the model aircraft for better visibility. The planes used in the project were modified ready-to-fly models. Testing flights and landings were carried out at Rudyard Lake in Staffordshire. However, during testing one of the planes crashed into the water.
A YouTube video documenting the project showcases Whomsley’s numerous attempts to land the planes on the carrier as well as highlights from the building process. This is not the first time Whomsley has made history with his engineering projects; he previously set a Guinness World Record for the fastest remote-controlled jet-powered car. The car was equipped with a JetCat 220 engine and an aluminum chassis and reached speeds of up to 94.76 mph before being destroyed after hitting 141 mph on a third run.
