On Sol 13, I once again took on the role of SOWG Chair to plan out activities for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL). The tactical planning team has been steadily improving in their efficiency, allowing us to include a wealth of new scientific observations in today’s plan. The science team was particularly strong, with Steve Squyres at the helm. As an expert in geology and the Principal Investigator for the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, Steve brought a wealth of knowledge to the table.
During the planning process, we encountered a challenge when we learned that the SAM instrument checkout planned for Sol 14 would need to be split into two Sols. This was due to the need to analyze the results from the first part on Earth before proceeding with the second part. In order to avoid wasting an extra sol to complete this task, we had to quickly reorganize our plan and fit the first part of checkout into Sol 13. It was no easy feat, but with our combined efforts and expertise, we were able to come up with a new plan that passed onto the second shift for implementation.
The Opportunity mission continues its operations on Mars’ surface above us and provides ongoing support and guidance as we work through these challenges. Despite any difficulties faced during planning, having individuals like Steve Squyres on our team has made all the difference in creating a successful plan for Sol 13.
