The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) is a special initiative by the USDA to provide financial assistance to agricultural producers in protecting and improving natural resources and habitat for migratory birds and other avian species. The program is being launched with an investment of nearly $11 million from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
In Arkansas, NRCS will provide up to $4 million in financial assistance in fiscal year 2024 for the Migratory Bird Resurgence Initiative (MBRI) to create habitat on private lands in the state’s flyways. State Conservationist Mike Sullivan emphasized the importance of this initiative in sustaining migratory bird populations and enhancing climate resiliency and carbon stewardship on working lands. By providing more nesting, food, and resting areas for migratory birds, the initiative aims to improve habitat for wildlife and promote natural resource conservation.
Agricultural producers interested in receiving financial assistance through EQIP – MBRI can submit their applications by May 17, 2024, for funding consideration this year. While applications are accepted year-round, specific program deadlines are in place for ranking and funding opportunities within each state. Additionally, assistance through EQIP – MBRI is also available in California, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Texas.
