Call to Earth: CNN’s Editorial Series Meets Nature Photography Awards to Showcase Sustainability and Stunning Imagery

In a world where environmental challenges loom, CNN has launched its editorial series Call to Earth. This series aims to report on the issues facing our planet and highlight potential solutions to inspire positive action. To this end, Rolex’s Perpetual Planet initiative has partnered with CNN to bring awareness and education to key sustainability issues.

Meanwhile, in the realm of photography, the World Nature Photography Awards have just announced its winners for 2024. The grand prize went to Tracey Lund from the United Kingdom for her striking photograph of two gannets battling for a fish in Scotland’s Shetland Islands. Lund captured this moment from a boat using a DSLR camera in waterproof housing during her holiday. Despite taking 1,800 images that day, only two were usable.

The awards featured various categories including animal portraits, plants and fungi, and different types of animal behaviors. Ivan Pedretti from Italy won the Planet Earth’s landscapes and environments category with his enchanting photo of winter in Stokksnes, Iceland. Pedretti highlighted the color contrast of the white mountains with the black dunes and yellow grass in his image.

Established in 2020, the World Nature Photography Awards aims to promote photography while also supporting the planet by planting a tree for each entry into the competition. The organization believes that photography can influence people to see the world differently and change their habits for the betterment of the planet.
