A major police operation for an armed robber took place in Kenner, a suburb of New Orleans, Louisiana. Sunday morning, Kenner police responded to a call around 9:45 a.m. local time for shots fired in a modest residential area. When they arrived, they found two men in a car, one wounded in the arm and the other in the stomach. The neighborhood where the incident occurred appeared rundown, with a railway line nearby and few signs of maintenance.
The police conducted a search and linked one of the houses to a family named Lathers. Matthew Lathers, 31, was suspected of seriously injuring a man during a burglary in the area. A warrant was issued, and a SWAT unit was called in to implement it. After hours of sporadic gunfire, Lathers eventually appeared at the front door armed with a rifle. He opened fire, injuring five people, including police officers. One of the injured officers was still hospitalized Sunday evening.
The Lopinto Sheriff’s Office now believes that Lathers may be responsible for additional shootings in the state. The investigation is ongoing.
