In an effort to provide clarity and transparency to its users, Google has updated its Terms of Service on May 22. The update aims to inform users about their options in case of conflicts and how Google handles ownership of original content created by artificial intelligence (AI).
One of the key updates involves clarifying ownership of content generated by generative AI. Google specifies in the ‘your content’ section that it will not claim ownership of original content produced by its services, including generative AI. This means that any content created using these services remains the property of the user who created it. Additionally, Google outlines the responsibilities of each party in case of disputes for violating the terms of use. If a dispute arises, Google can suspend or terminate access as well as pursue other remedies as per applicable law. Users are also given the opportunity to describe any disagreements and resolve them with the company.
Another important update is addressing abuse by users of its services. To address issues where “a small number of people” have not followed the rules, Google now includes more examples and details about inappropriate use and interference with services that are not allowed. This update aims to provide greater clarity and transparency for users using Google’s services and products, ensuring that everyone is aware of what is acceptable behavior when using digital services and products.
