KBR Awarded Contract for Zero-Carbon Green Ammonia Technology in Norway

Fortescua, a green energy, technology, and metals company from Australia, has awarded KBR a contract to provide its green ammonia technology K-GreeN for the Holmaneset green energy project in Norway. Under the terms of the contract, KBR will offer technology licensing, proprietary engineering design, and front-end engineering design (FEED) support services for the 675 metric tonnes per day grassroots green ammonia plant in Norway.

KBR’s President of Sustainable Technology Solutions expressed his excitement about working with Fortescua on this project and providing their zero-carbon green ammonia technology. The company aims to play a significant role in the development of the green energy value chain and decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries, aligning with Fortescua’s ESG objectives. The Holmaneset plant will produce green ammonia using electrolyzers powered by renewable hydropower for hydrogen production, with plans to distribute the ammonia to domestic and European markets to aid in decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries.

Fortescua has set construction to begin in 2025 and operations to commence in 2027 pending final approvals from the board. In early 2024, Tecnimont was awarded FEED work for the plant, including designing electrolyzer integration, air separation unit for nitrogen production, ammonia production plant, storage and ship loading facilities. Tecnimont is also expected to submit an engineering procurement construction (EPC) proposal for the plant’s realization as part of the agreement.

The Holmaneset project achieved significant milestones in 2023 with a grant of €203.7 million from the European Union (EU) for the green ammonia plant and securing renewable power through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Statkraft. This progress reflects Fortescua’s commitment to advancing sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions in the region.
