Delta Omega Mason Chapter Celebrates a Decade of Public Health Excellence

The College of Public Health is thrilled to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Gamma Tau chapter of Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health. Delta Omega’s main objective is to promote excellence in public health and improve the health of individuals both domestically and abroad. During induction ceremonies, Delta Omega recognizes outstanding graduate and undergraduate students who have excelled academically.

Over the past ten years, the College has inducted 108 Master’s students, 39 undergraduate students, and two faculty members (Dr. Laura Poms and Dr. Lila Fleming) into the Gamma Tau chapter of Delta Omega. This year, the chapter will be welcoming its first cohort of PhD students, further expanding its reach in recognizing academic achievements in public health.

Carolyn Drews-Botsch, professor and chair of Global and Community Health, emphasized the importance of having a Delta Omega chapter at Mason in recognizing the academic excellence of students and faculty. The College continues to excel in public health education, research, and practice, with its students serving as a testament to its success.

The impact of Delta Omega can be seen in the accomplishments of its alumni. Bianca Alba, a mentor in the Public Health Alumni Mentorship Program, is now a Public Health Analyst at the Health Resources and Services Administration. Abby Lilak, who conducted research in Kenya during her MS in Global Health, is pursuing a PhD at the University of Florida. Taylor Thomas, another alumna, credits her experience at the College for igniting her passion for population health as she pursues her Master of Public Health at George Washington University.

In addition to celebrating its tenth anniversary milestone, Mason’s Delta Omega chapter is also observing National Public Health Week 2024 through volunteer service events with organizations such as Patriot Pantry and Presidents Park Greenhouse. This commitment to public health reflects the chapter’s dedication to advancing the health and well-being of communities throughout their work with these organizations.

As we look back on this milestone anniversary celebration for Mason’s Delta Omega Chapter we are grateful for all that it has achieved over this past decade while continuing to inspire future generations to pursue careers in public health.
