Astronauts Prepare to Repair NASA’s NICER Telescope

The telescope is equipped with 56 aluminum X-ray concentrators, each consisting of nested mirrors that direct X-rays into a detector. Positioned in front of the concentrators is a thin filter known as a thermal shield which acts to prevent sunlight from interfering with the X-ray observations. Sitting atop the concentrators is a hollow circular piece made of carbon composite called a sunshade. The sunshade is divided into six segments resembling slices of a pie and serves the purpose of keeping the concentrators from overheating in direct sunlight while also safeguarding the delicate thermal shields from damage.

A light leak was discovered in the telescope, prompting further investigation. Upon closer examination, photos revealed small areas of damage on some of the thermal shields. The exact cause of this damage remains unclear at this time. It is imperative to address these issues promptly to ensure the continued functionality and accuracy of the telescope’s observations. By identifying and rectifying the source of these problems, the telescope can continue its valuable contribution to scientific research and discovery.
