On Friday, the Boston Red Sox announced the passing of former MLB first baseman and outfielder Dave McCarthy at the age of 54. The news came as a shock to many fans and teammates who remember McCarthy as a key member of the Red Sox team that won the World Series in 2004.
McCarthy had an illustrious 11-year MLB career, playing for seven different teams before retiring with the Red Sox in 2005. Throughout his career, he accumulated an impressive number of hits, home runs, and RBI. In total, McCarthy hit 362 times, hit 36 home runs, and drove in 175 runs during his time in the big leagues. He also had a solid batting average of .242 over his career.
Despite his impressive statistics, McCarthy’s early career was marked by several trades. After being drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the first round of the 1991 MLB draft, he spent two-and-a-half seasons with the team before being traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 1995 and later to the San Francisco Giants. He also played for several other teams throughout his career, including the Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, Tampa Bay Rays, and Oakland Athletics before joining the Red Sox.
