In 2023, a team of scientists from the National Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies, and its Public Center El Colegio de la Frontera Sur made a groundbreaking discovery in Chetumal Bay, Quintana Roo. The Taam ja’ blue hole was found to be the deepest of its kind in the world, with measurements reaching 420 meters below sea level. This discovery was made using the Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) profiler instrument, which allowed the team to understand the characteristics of the water column inside the blue hole.
The Taam ja’ blue hole has a morphology similar to that of a cenote, with dominance of water with brackish or marine characteristics and being completely submerged. The team identified significant variations in temperature and salinity, different water layers, and transition zones. These characteristics suggest the likely existence of underground connections between the bay and the Caribbean Sea through the hole.
