SCICON, or the Outdoor School of Science and Conservation, is a unique location in California that educates fifth and sixth graders on the importance of science and conservation. Located in the foothills of Tulare County, SCICON is operated by the Tulare County Office of Education.
The school’s director, Dianne Shew, describes SCICON as a magical place where students can experience nature’s beauty and gain a deeper understanding of their impact on the environment. The 1,170-acre campus attracts over 8,000 students each year who have the opportunity to hike, learn about aquatic life, and explore a museum featuring local items and animals.
In early 2023, SCICON faced damage from historic flooding that affected native salamander habitats. However, with support from community efforts and grants such as one from the Disney Conservation Fund through Friends of SCICON organization, restoration efforts began. Disney “VoluntEARS” joined forces to clear debris and revitalize the habitat for salamanders.
Shew believes that these efforts not only will restore salamander habitats but also educate students on environmental conservation’s importance. By inspiring each child who visits SCICON to take action and spread conservation messages, great strides can be made in protecting our planet. With community support and restoration work underway at SCICON, its mission to empower students to make positive impacts on the environment remains strong.
