Stephen Ames Successfully Defends Mitsubishi Title on 60th Birthday Bash

Stephen Ames celebrated his 60th birthday in a special way by winning the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, marking his eighth victory on the PGA Tour Champions. Closing with a 5-under 67 on Sunday, Ames secured the title defense of his record third victory in the event with a total of 14-under 202 at TPC Sugarloaf.

This win made him the first multiple winner on the tour this year, adding to his previous victory at the Chubb Classic in February. Ames, originally from Trinidad and Tobago and now a naturalized Canadian citizen, has seen a resurgence in his career on the PGA Tour Champions. With six victories in his last 29 starts, he has established himself as a strong competitor on the over-50 tour. His previous wins include two victories in his first 175 starts and another at TPC Sugarloaf in 2017.

During the final round, Ames started strong with an opening birdie on the par-4 first hole, then eagled the par-5 sixth and the par-4 13th. He also birdied the par-4 14th, but had bogeys on the par-4 15th and 17th holes. With a final birdie on the par-5 18th hole, he secured a four-stroke victory and successfully defended his title at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic.
