Recently, a massive anaconda believed to be one of the world’s largest was found dead in the Formoso River in Bonito, Brazil. The northern green anaconda, named Ana Julia, measured 26 feet in length and weighed approximately 440 pounds. The discovery was made during filming for the National Geographics Disney+ series ‘Pole to Pole’ with Will Smith.
Although there were initial speculations that Ana Julia may have been shot and killed, investigations are ongoing to confirm the exact cause of death. Professor Freek Vonk, who shared the sad news on Instagram, emphasized that Ana Julia was a healthy and strong animal that could have contributed significantly to the species for years to come.
Professor Vonk clarified that although there were rumors about Ana Julia being shot, authorities had not found any evidence to support this claim. Investigations are still ongoing, considering all possibilities, including natural deaths.
The discovery of Ana Julia has brought attention to the importance of giant anacondas in local biodiversity. Anecdotal reports from the area suggest that there may be other giant anacondas measuring over 7.5 meters long and weighing around 500 kilograms.
The loss of such a significant creature highlights the need for continued conservation efforts to protect these important species and their habitats.
