Tyler Broussard, an eighth grader at Eastside John P. Powell Magnet School, recently achieved success in the Greater East Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair (GREASF). She won third place in the competition that took place on February 23, 2024. As a result of her success, Tyler advanced to the Alabama Science and Engineering Fair (ASEF) where she competed in the junior division for middle schoolers in grades 6th-8th.

Tyler’s project, titled “Lights On” and falling under the category of Robotics and Intelligent Machines, caught the attention of judges. Her passion for science and engineering was evident through her innovative approach to creating a device that could detect changes in light levels and respond accordingly.

At the ASEF, Tyler was recognized with the Broadcom Award for Coding with Commitment, earning a $250 gift card and a Raspberry Pi kit. This accomplishment led to her nomination among the top 10% of participants from the ASEF. Tyler has now progressed to the Broadcom Masters 2024 competition, where she will compete against approximately 300 other students for entry into one of three categories: Physical Science or Mathematics; Earth or Environmental Science; Computer Science or Information Technology.

Throughout her journey, Tyler has been receiving guidance from her Physical Science teacher, Dr. Vickie Benson. Dr. Benson, who also serves as the K-8 STEAM Specialist at East John P. Powell Magnet School, has been instrumental in helping Tyler hone her skills and succeed in the competitive science fair circuit.

Tyler’s success is a testament to her dedication to learning and innovation in science and engineering. Her achievements have not only earned her recognition but have also inspired others to pursue careers in these fields.

Broadcom Masters is a national science competition for U.S middle schools organized by Society for Science which gives students an opportunity to showcase their innovative ideas and skills on a larger platform.

In conclusion, Tyler Broussard’s journey is proof that hard work can lead to great achievements in any field of study. With guidance from Dr. Vickie Benson and support from family and friends, she has overcome challenges along the way to become one of America’s top young scientists today.
