Discovering the Zoo Technology program at JCC

Jefferson Community College’s Zoo Technology program is now open for registration for the fall semester or prerequisites during the summer. Program Director Dr. Mark Irwin and Keirsten Chiodi recently discussed the program on 7 News at Noon. The program offers hands-on experience working with zookeepers, veterinarians, curators, educators, and administrators.

As part of this year’s capstone project, students will provide animal enrichment education and presentations at Zoo New York’s season kickoff on May 4. JCC’s Zoo Technology program provides the necessary training and experience for students to become zookeepers who require technical expertise and a strong scientific background to provide the best care for animals, educate the public, and participate in cooperative programs regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Graduates of the program have found jobs across the country, with some even completing internships in places like Alaska. Starting the Zoo Technology program at JCC in the fall is recommended, with prerequisites in Math and English required. These prerequisites can be completed during the summer session, with special classes starting on May 28 and early and full-session courses beginning on June 3.
