In a surprise announcement during a Broward School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata announced his resignation citing health concerns. After discussing his decision with his family, including his wife and four adult children, and consulting with his doctors, Licata decided it was best to retire from his role as an educator after more than 30 years in South Florida.
Following Licata’s resignation, the Board voted 8-1 to replace him with Howard Hepburn, a deputy superintendent within the district. This marks the end of Licata’s tenure as leader of Broward County Public Schools, the sixth-largest school system in the nation and second-largest in Florida, which he had been leading since July of the previous year.
Licata expressed gratitude for the community’s trust and support, stating that he believes the District is on the right path for even greater accomplishments.
