General Erik Kurilla, the top US commander for the Middle East, is currently in Israel to discuss security threats with the country’s military officials. The Pentagon confirmed this visit on Thursday amidst concerns of potential retaliation from Iran following an Israeli airstrike in Syria that resulted in the deaths of several members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a warning against Israel on Wednesday, stating that the country would face consequences for its actions. At the same time, US President Joe Biden reiterated unwavering support for Israel. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who emphasized that any direct Iranian attack would be met with a suitable response.
General Kurilla is meeting with key Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) leadership to address the current security challenges in the region. The trip was expedited due to recent developments and was not on the originally scheduled date. Pentagon spokesperson Major General Pat Ryder informed journalists that the visit was necessary given growing concerns from Iran and its allies.
Both countries are preparing for the potential of an Iranian attack and have committed to defending against any threats. The Pentagon released a statement reaffirming US support for Israel in the face of these concerns, emphasizing that their partnership remains strong especially in this regional climate.
