Mikael Jasin from Indonesia has been named the winner of the 2024 World Barista Championship, defeating 53 competitors from around the world. This marks the first time an Indonesian has won this prestigious title, and only the third time in four years that a major coffee-producing country has taken home the top prize.
Jasin’s winning routine focused on meditation and mindfulness, reflecting his belief in the importance of staying present and connected to the coffee-making process. His choice of coffee beans was equally unique, with an Ethiopian landrace variety called Ají from Colombia and a Gesha-variety coffee from Panama.
The final rankings were as follows: Mikael Jasin of Indonesia in first place, Jack Simpson from Australia in second, Takayuki Ishitani from Japan in third, Honoka Kawashima from Aotearoa/New Zealand in fourth, Junghwan Lim from South Korea in fifth, Ian Kissick from Ireland in sixth, and Zjevaun Lemar Janga from The Netherlands in seventh.
This year’s championship took place at the World of Coffee Asia in Busan, South Korea. In addition to being crowned world champion, Jasin will also have the opportunity to host the 2025 event in Jakarta.
