The Sherburne-Earlville athletic teams have officially changed their nickname to the Timberwolves, replacing the previous name of Marauders. This decision was made by the school board and is effective immediately. The change was necessary due to a directive from the New York State Department of Education to end the use of nicknames, mascots, and logos that depict Native American culture.
The Timberwolves was chosen after a student vote, where it received the most support compared to the other options of Wolves and Wolf Pack. Among high school students, Timberwolves received 48% of the vote, while middle school students voted in favor of Timberwolves with 52%. The official wolf-related logos and fonts adopted by the district in the previous school year will remain the same, as well as the school’s “Maroon and White” colors.
The Sherburne-Earlville School District is proud to announce that their athletic teams have officially changed their nickname to Timberwolves. This decision was made in response to a directive from the New York State Department of Education to end the use of nicknames, mascots, and logos that depict Native American culture. The change was necessary for us to maintain our commitment to respecting all cultures and promoting inclusivity in our community.
After careful consideration and discussion among our staff members, we have decided on Timberwolves as our new nickname. This name was chosen after a student vote where it received more support compared to other options such as Wolves and Wolf Pack. We understand that this change may be difficult for some individuals who were attached to our previous name but we believe that this new name will better represent who we are as a district and what we stand for: teamwork, hard work, and perseverance.
We want you to know that this change will not affect our official wolf-related logos and fonts which were adopted last year or our “Maroon and White” colors. We hope you continue to support us in this new journey towards inclusivity and respect for all cultures.
